“A
great deal of my science
and engineering research is about design, often the design of complex
systems that involve people and various computer technologies. I believe that a similar, systems orientated,
approach has relevance to areas of artistic design.”
Compared to the design, or craft, necessary for a one-off, design with multiple things is an order of magnitude more difficult (i.e. multiply one-off design effort by between x10 (1,000%) and x99). DDD SYSTEMS Art PRINTER offers an affordable design service to public and private sector organisations, and to home interior decorators with domestic space to fill, on how to use sets of photographs effectively to achieve a range of goals.
Most of the photographs in the Photograph Gallery have been selected from larger sets of nearly equally worthy contenders. There are tens of thousands of photographs available. In addition, there are also photographs that a related because they are of the same/similar subject at different times of the year, or photographed under other different-conditions; as well, of course, that photographs that are visually and/or conceptually related are grouped together within the Photograph Gallery.
While described below for public displays, the sorts of high level design issues typically addressed by the DDD SYSTEMS Art PRINTER design service, are also, with a little modification, suitable for domestic application. The following list of issues illustrates to complexity of such design:
For
example, there’s a big difference between the foyer to a company wanting to
project a high-tech image, from what might be suitable in a country dentist’s
waiting room.
What will they be doing and thinking? How long will they be viewers? For example, a corridor provides a different viewing opportunity to a meeting or waiting room.
First,
the space in a building, the rooms and access areas (corridors, stairs, etc.)?
Second, the space within rooms? In both cases, ‘What’s the décor?’ (the walls,
ceiling and floors, furnishings, etc.).
Third, what will or might be changed, and when?
Also to
consider, there are cultural and, indeed, legal, constraints on what should, or
can, be displayed in public spaces.
The DDD SYSTEMS pricing
policy is to leave this primarily up to the client.
Just as
a professional writer writes for a (paying) readership, so one part of the
photographer’s craft should be to know who might be its viewers, when taking
each photograph. Yes, some writers do
take an interest in layout and font, but many don’t, but the display
environment is so much more complicated for photographers – not just who will
enjoy their work, but where, under what circumstances, etc.?
Using
multiple photographs as interior design décor, is a type of graphic design layout problem, one in a
constrained 3D space. Such spaces range
from the ‘within-room simple’, such as a fireplace suitable for a triptych (3
photographs), to large buildings with many rooms and access ways that require
some form of integrated approach. The Artist wants to achieve more, to
satisfy, beguile and stimulate his viewers, not by one image, but by sets of
them.
‘What are the range of
design options?’ Answer: ‘There are a lot of
them.’ The point is that many possible
designs are unlikely to occur to people who aren’t expert at graphic design and
who aren’t Artists.
The DDD SYSTEMS Art PRINTER design service thus combines an affordable, powerful, and respectable, scientific/engineering ‘systems’ approach to establish client’s needs, with expertise at both graphic design and with ‘Photography as Art’. Potential clients should contact Dr. Dan Diaper.
