PowerPoint
is the best software that Microsoft ever produced.
As a software application package, Microsoft PowerPoint is rarely understood. Most people think of it as just a mechanism to create and present slides to an audience. Actually it is a wonderfully powerful graphics editor, first for producing static graphics, and then as an animation editor. It is Dr. Diaper’s editor of choice, other than using Microsoft Word for written documents, and he uses PowerPoint statically to create pictures, graphs, and compound images of text, graphics and photographs.
Dr. Diaper has often used PowerPoint as a qualitative and quantitative data analysis tool! For example, for analysing interview and task transcripts, or for numerical data organisation prior to statistical analysis.
In his most powerful application, Dr. Diaper has used PowerPoint to create electronic lectures (DIYELs – Do-It-Yourself Electronic Lectures – see references [52], [53] and [56] in his curriculum vitae). These e-lectures combine animated text and graphics with audio or video clips and a complete navigation system to screens, and even parts of screens, is provided. The claim made is that this sort of use of PowerPoint far exceeds the use expectations of its designers; certainly a fair bit of trickery and cunning was initially required to make PowerPoint behave in the way it was required to do as an e-lecture platform.
In recent years there has been considerable criticism of PowerPoint as a presentation medium, although this can be plausibly interpreted as a complaint about how people use it, rather than about the software itself, not least because most of PowerPoint’s functionality is not, or poorly, deployed by users.
